Jaribu Shahid (* 11. September 1955 in Detroit as Ben Henderson ) is an American double bass player of the Creative Jazz . Since 2004 he has played in the Art Ensemble of Chicago .

Live and act

Shahid taught himself the basics of bass playing and initially appeared with rather local greats of different genres such as Kenn Cox , Wendell Harrison , Jimmy Wilkins, JC Heard or Martha and the Vandellas . In the band of Kamau Kenyatta and around 1975 with Faruq Z. Bey , he turned to free jazz before he worked with Tani Tabbal in a permanent rhythm team from 1976 (after he moved to Detroit ) . In 1978 he moved to Philadelphia, where he lived and performed with the core of Sun Ras Archestra. Since 1979 he has been part of Roscoe Mitchell's groups , such as his Note Factory . In 2006 he worked with Mitchell in Evan Parker's Transatlantic Art Ensemble ( Boustrophedon ). In addition, Shahid has worked with Geri Allen , Fred Anderson and Griot Galaxy (including Tani Tabbal); he toured Europe with Milt Jackson (DVD from the show in Munich). After Malachi Favors passed away , he was involved in several tours and albums by the Art Ensemble of Chicago , such as We Are on the Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2018 . He is also a member of David Murray ( Live in Berlin - Black Saint Quartet , 2008) and the Freedom Arts Quartet .

Shahid is also featured on albums by Evan Parker , James Carter , Rod Williams, Craig Taborn , Hugh Ragin , Abdoulaye Ndiaye and Blue Dog .
