Ronald Snijders (born April 8, 1951 in Paramaribo ) is a Dutch jazz musician and author of Surinamese origin. The flute is his main instrument.

Life

Snijders, son of the Surinamese composer Eddy Snijders , began to learn the flute at the age of ten. Later he also played guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone. In 1970 he moved to the Netherlands to attend the TH Delft to study engineering. He then stayed in Europe to work as a musician; he first played with Willem Breuker , whose collection he belonged to until 1977. In 1973 he won the NOS Jazzconcours in Laren . Since 1977 he has concentrated on working with his own band, with whom he performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival as well as in numerous countries in Europe, but also in West and South Africa, the Caribbean and North America. In his compositions he often draws on music from his homeland such as Kaseko , but also on elements of pop and world music . He dealt with Kaseko more intensively during his musicological studies, which he completed from 1986 to 1991 at the Universiteit van Amsterdam . In addition to ethno-jazz, he also recorded his own children's songs and his father's compositions on his albums . He has also performed with the Metropole Orkest .

As an author, he has presented a biography of his father, but also short stories about the everyday life of Surinamese in the Netherlands.

In 2001 he was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau .
