Hugh Ragin (born April 9, 1951 in Houston , Texas) is an American trumpet player (trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn) of creative jazz .

Live and act

Ragin grew up in the city of his birth and began playing the trumpet as a teenager with the Houston All-City High School Orchestra , with which he toured the UK. After completing a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Houston and a master's degree in trumpet playing from Colorado State University , he took part in a workshop in Woodstock with Roscoe Mitchell in 1978 and worked the following year in Germany with Mitchell and Wadada Leo Smith , performed with them at the Moers Jazz Festival and then toured with Anthony Braxton .

His long-term collaboration with David Murray began in 1980 when he played with cellist Abdul Wadud and bassist Fred Hopkins in Murray's drummeless quartet ( The People's Choice ). Ragin can also be heard on Murray albums such as Picasso (DIW, 1992), Dark Star (1996) and Speaking In Toungues ( Enja , 1998). In addition, the trumpeter played between 1991 and 1996 in Murray's big band projects such as David Murray Big Band Conducted by Lawrence "Butch" Morris (1991) or South of the Border from 1992 with.

In 1981 Ragin took part in the recording of Anthony Braxton's Composition 98 , in 1982 he played with bassist John Lindberg in a duo ( Team Work ), in 1983 he went on tour with Maynard Ferguson's band. In 1984 he recorded his first album under his own name on the independent jazz label Cecma , Metaphysical Question , trio with John Lindberg and percussionist Thurman Barker . During this time, Ragin also took part in recordings of John Lindberg's big band projects ( Trilogy of Works for Eleven Instrumentalists , 1984). In 1987 he performed with Roscoe Mitchell in the New York Knitting Factory and worked on his ECM album Nine to Get Ready . In the 1990s Ragin was - outside of his activities with Murray - involved in projects by Butch Morris , Fred Wesley and the pianist DD Jackson ( Paired Down ). In 2018 he was a member of the Art Ensembleof Chicago ( We Are on the Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration ).

Ragin teaches at Oberlin College .
