Malachi favors
Malachi Magoustous Favors (born August 22, 1937 in Lexington , Mississippi , † January 30, 2004 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American jazz bassist.
Live and act
Favors played the double bass from the age of fifteen . After his military service in Korea, he worked in Chicago in the mid-1950s with musicians such as Andrew Hill (including 1956 for the doo-wop label Ping ), and occasionally with the trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard . In 1961 he became a member of Muhal Richard Abrams ' The Experimental Band . Since its inception, he has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). In 1966 he became a member of Roscoe Mitchell's Quartet, from which the Art Ensemble of Chicago emerged . During his long-standing membership in this group, he worked on numerous albums and, in addition to the bass, played the zither, banjo, harmonica, drums and other instruments.
Outside of the Art Ensemble , Favors also worked with musicians such as Archie Shepp , Sunny Murray , Dewey Redman , Muhal Richard Abrams and the group The Ritual Trio . With Lester Bowie he recorded the album From the Root to the Source , in 1977 his solo album Natural and the Spiritual was released . In 1994 Favors played with Roman Bunka and Fathy Salama at JazzFest Berlin . The CD Color Me Cairo ( Enja ) was created. In 1998 he recorded the album 2x4 (Southport) in a duo with bassist Tatsu Aoki . Shortly before his death, the album Maghostut Trio - Live at Last ( RogueArt ) was created.
