Fathy Salama

Fathy Salama (born March 27, 1969 in Shubra , Cairo ) is an Egyptian musician ( keyboards , synthesizers , compositions ) who modernized the music of his homeland using fusion music . So far he is the only composer from the Arab culture who has received a Grammy .

Live and act

Salama first got to know the music of Omm Kalsūm , Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Farid El Atrache through the radio , and later also jazz . He started playing the piano at the age of six. From the age of thirteen he performed in Cairo clubs. The composer and jazz musician Ossman Kareem introduced him to jazz. While visiting North America, he took lessons from Barry Harris , Sun Ra , Hal Galper and Pat Patrick .

In the 1980s Salama composed and arranged for singers such as Amr Diab , Ali Al Haggar and Anushka , with whom he had several hits in Egypt and the Arab world. In 1989 he founded his band Sharkiat , whose albums were also released in Europe. Later he also worked with the embryo . In 1994 he gave concerts with Roman Bunka and Malachi Favors at the JazzFest Berlin ; In the following years he toured Europe with the Swiss rock group The Maniacs ; in Cairo he has also performed with flamenco musicians , with Al Di Meola and CubanaSon . He also fused Egyptian and electronic music ( Kouchari ). In 2011 he supported the revolt in Egypt by composing and giving concerts for young poets and singers.

Fathy also gave master classes at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen .

Prizes and awards

The album Égypte , produced by him for Youssou N'Dour , received a Grammy for best world music album in 2005 ; he was also given the BBC Music Award . In 2000, his score for Fallen Angels Paradise's and Signs Of April received awards.
