Corky McClerkin

Wilbon "Corky" McClerkin (* 1941 or 1942; † June 7, 2015 in Chicago ) was an American jazz pianist and keyboardist who was active in the Chicago music scene.

McClerkin succeeded Herbie Hancock as a pianist in the Hyde Park High School jazz band. He first studied at Roosevelt University and received a Masters in Urban Studies from Loyola University . As a pianist and musical director, he worked for singer Sasha Dalton and performed with jazz musicians such as Elvin Jones , Jack DeJohnette , Sonny Stitt and Dee Dee Bridgewater . McClerkin released the album The Power of One on the Southport Records label in the 1990s . Operating in the genres of hardbop , Latin jazz and soul jazz , he was influenced by Ramsey Lewis , Herbie Hancock and Ahmad Jamal . McClerkin was involved in five recording sessions between 1980 and 2014 , following Tom Lord . He and his wife were killed in a car accident in June 2015.
