Premik Russell Tubbs (born August 3, 1952 in Croton-on-Hudson , New York) is an American musician ( saxophone , flute , arrangement ) and record producer . He plays tenor , alto as well as soprano saxophone , bansuri , lyricon , lap steel guitar and EWI . He is best known for his collaborations with producer Narada Michael Walden and the early records of Whitney Houston .

Career

Tubbs rose in 1974 at the Mahavishnu Orchestra by John McLaughlin and appeared in 1976 on two plates of Narada Michael Walden , with whom he was to take many more albums in the future. In the late 1970s he accompanied Santana on a tour and also played on a solo record by Carlos Santana , The Swing of Delight (1980), on which jazz pianist Herbie Hancock was an important guest. During this time he often played with jazz and fusion greats such as Jeff Beck , Cecil McBee , George Duke , Stanley Clarke , Jaco Pastorius , TM Stevens , Wayne Shorter and Jean-Luc Ponty .

In 1983 he joined Lonnie Liston Smith's band . With him he played two albums and performed a. a. at the Montreux Jazz Festival . From the mid-1980s onwards, he played frequently on popular R&B albums, including hits by Whitney Houston ( How Will I Know ), Regina Belle ( Baby Come To Me ) and Jermaine Stewart ( We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off ). Much of it was also produced by Walden. In the early 1990s, Tubbs focused on working with Scarlet Rivera , a violinist for Bob Dylan . With Rivera he accompanied u. a. also Spyro Gyra .

In the new millennium he also devoted himself to Indian music and played with Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka Shankar . Since 2012 he has accompanied the pop musician Sting for his Rainforest benefit concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City . On these special evenings he played with a number of internationally known artists such as Lady Gaga , Bruno Mars , Elton John , Meryl Streep , Stevie Wonder , Paul Simon , Tina Turner , Bruce Springsteen , James Taylor , Billy Joel , Diana Ross , Will Ferrell , Katharine McPhee , Rosanne Cash , Jennifer Hudson , Vince Gill and Bryn Terfel .

In 2012 he took part in the world premiere of Karl Jenkins ' The Peacemakers (also at Carnegie Hall) as a flautist on the Indian bansuri and the tinwhistle . Recently he played a. a. with Snehasish Mozumder, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , Fiona Joy Hawkins, Shambhu Vineberg and Uli Geissendörfer, with whom he released the 2014 album Passport to Happyness .
