Buster Cooper

George "Buster" Cooper (* 4 April 1929 in Saint Petersburg , Florida ; † 13. May 2016 ) was an American jazz - trombone player of Swing .

Life

Buster Cooper attended Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg and first played in local orchestras such as the band of Nat Towles in Texas , came to New York City in 1950 , studied at the Hartnett School until 1952, played with Lionel Hampton from 1952-55 and attended with whose volume at the end of 1953 Europe. He was then two years in the house band of the Apollo Theater in Harlem , played with Benny Goodman and formed his own band with his brother Steve (a bassist ), the Coopers Brothers Band . He was part of the Ellington Band between 1962 and 1969 and moved to Los Angeles in 1973 , where he played with local bands.

Cooper later appeared again with Hampton and, in the past few years, with TS Monk . He has also made records for Duke Ellington , Prestige Blues Swingers , Arnett Cobb , Jack McDuff , and AK Salim . He played regularly in St. Petersburg until the 2010s. In his later years he still worked on recordings with musicians such as Woody Herman & Lionel Hampton All Stars, Curtis Peagler , Gerald Wilson , Bobby Short , Frank Capp / Nat Pierce Juggernaut, Ruth Brown and Yasuko Agawa , most recently with The IMTS Jubilee All Stars ( When Legends Get Together , with Clark Terry , Sweets Edison , Willie Pickens and others ). In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 241 recording sessions between 1952 and 1996.
