AK Salim

AK Salim (* as Ahmad Khatah Atkinson on July 28, 1922 in Chicago ) is an American alto saxophonist and arranger of swing and modern jazz .

AK Salim played alto saxophone in various bands from 1938, such as King Kolax (1938/39), Jimmy Rachel 1941/42, Tiny Bradshaw 1943 and took part in the jam sessions in New York's Minton’s Playhouse around 1943 together with Lester Young and Charlie Parker part. From 1944 Salim worked as an arranger for Lucky Millinder (until 1946), Cab Calloway , Jimmy Lunceford , Lionel Hampton and until 1949 Count Basie . After that he was musically inactive until 1956, but took up his work as an arranger again, so for Tito Puente and again for Count Basie. Around 1957 he played a few albums under his own name for Savoy Records .
