Frank James Rehak (* 7. July 1926 in New York City ; † 26. June 1987 in Badger, California ) was an American jazz - trombone .

Live and act

Frank Rehak began playing the piano and cello, but switched to the trombone during his military service in the US Navy, of which he was a member from 1943 to 1947. After the Second World War, he first played in swing bands in Hawaii and then settled in New York. There he worked for Al Mooney and was a member of the big bands of Gene Krupa and Jimmy Dorsey ; later he also played with Ray McKinley , Claude Thornhill and Woody Herman . In 1956 Rehak went on a world tour with the big bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Quincy Jones and otherwise worked as a studio musician in the commercial sector as well as in jazz . From 1958 to 1962 he worked in the big band of Gil Evans and participated in its recordings with Miles Davis , such as Miles Ahead , Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain and New Bottle, Old Wine (1958). However, his continued drug addiction impaired his professional career, which came to a temporary end when he left the Woody Herman band in 1969.

Rehak was somewhat forgotten in the jazz scene, but after his health recovery he got involved at the Synanon Center , where he led a choir, a group and a big band. He also taught, supervised radio broadcasts and eventually became head of the music department at a rehabilitation center for drug addicts.

Throughout his career, Rehak has made records by Benny Carter , Gene Quill All Stars , Johnny Richards , Manny Albam , Nat Pierce , Pete Rugolo , The Prestige All Stars , George Russell , Al Cohn , Melba Liston and Gerry Mulligan ; he also recorded with Liston, Walter Davis Jr. , Nelson Boyd and Charli Persip titles under his own name.
