Preston Jackson

Preston Jackson , born James Preston McDonald (* 3. January 1902 in New Orleans ; † 12. November 1983 in Blytheville , Arkansas ) was an American jazz - trombonist of the New Orleans Jazz and Chicago jazz .

Life

Preston Jackson came to Chicago in 1917 but did not begin playing the trombonist until 1920. His teachers were Roy Palmer and Honoré Dutrey in the early 1920s . For Dutrey he played alternately in King Oliver's famous band. In the 1920s he also played with Tig Chambers , Al Simone , Eli Rice and Art Sims , and was involved in recordings for Bernie Young and his Creole Jazz Band (1923) and Richard M. Jones . In 1926 he recorded under his own name with his Uptown Band , which also included trumpeter Shirley Clay .

In the 1930s he played with Dave Peyton (1930), Erskine Tate , Louis Armstrong (1931-32), Half Pint Jaxon (1933), Carroll Dickerson , Jimmy Bell , Jimmie Noone , Roy Eldridge , Walter Barnes , Johnny Long (1939 ) and Zilmer Randolph 's WPA tape. He was also involved in Johnny Dodd's last recordings in 1940.

In the 1940s it was no longer as common; however, his career lasted until the late 1950s; he played with Lil Hardin Armstrong during this time . In the 1960s he moved back to his hometown New Orleans and played in the Preservation Hall . He also worked there with Little Brother Montgomery in 1969 and with the New Orleans Joymakers by Kid Thomas , with whom he performed in Europe in 1973/74.

Recordings with Preston Jackson under his own name were made in 1926 and 1946; In 1972 he recorded an album with Benny Waters .
