Sonny Russo

Santo "Sonny" Russo (born March 20, 1929 in Brooklyn , New York City , † February 23, 2013 ) was an American jazz trombonist .

Live and act

Russo, who comes from a family of musicians - his father and grandfather were also professional musicians - first learned the piano, then the violin. At the beginning of his musical career, Russo worked with Buddy Morrow (1947), Lee Castle , Sam Donahue , Artie Shaw (1949-50), with Dick Collins , Buddy Rich , Ralph Flanagan , Rex Stewart and in the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra (1953-55 ). He also played in the orchestras of the brothers Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey , in 1956 in the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra and in the Al Cohn Orchestra. As a member of Eddie Sauter's orchestra , he was involved in the production of Stan Getz's soundtrack album Mickey One in 1965 . From 1967 to 1973 he was a member of the Tonight Show orchestra , played in Europe in 1975 with The World's Greatest Jazz Band and then occasionally performed with Frank Sinatra . As a studio musician, he also worked on the soundtracks of the films The Godfather , Goodfellas and Sophie's Decision (1982).
