Jeff Albert (born October 9, 1970 ) is an American jazz trombonist (also bass trombone , tuba , electronics), composer and university teacher .

Life

Albert comes from a family of musicians; his early role model was JJ Johnson , later influenced by trombonists George Lewis and Roswell Rudd . He studied at Loyola University New Orleans and the University of New Orleans ; he has been active in the New Orleans jazz scene since the 1990s . He played u. a. with Georg Graewe , Hamid Drake and Tony Dagradi ; He was also a member of The Mahogany Brass Band (with Delfeayo Marsalis ) and The Magnetic Ear around Martin Krusche .

In the course of his career, Albert also played with musicians from the rhythm and blues scene in New Orleans ; so he worked on the album Deacon John's Jump Blues (with Dr. John , Allen Toussaint and Wardell Quezergue ), also worked with Clarence Gatemouth Brown and Aaron Neville .

In 2005 Albert presented his debut album One with his own compositions. He works with his own quartet and is co-leader of the Lucky 7s (with Jeb Bishop ), and from 2007 founder and curator of the Open Ears Music Series . In 2012 he was named to the list of Rising Star Trombones by the Down Beat Critics Poll . Albert is a writer for the International Trombone Journal.

Jeff Albert has taught at Xavier University of Louisiana, the University of New Orleans, and Loyola University; until 2010 he was a PhD student in the Experimental Music and Digital Media program at Louisiana State University with Stephen David Beck and Jesse Allison ; he is currently an Assistant Professor at Loyola University. His electroacoustic compositions were u. a. Performed by the New Orleans New Music Ensemble and the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana (LOLs).
