Josh Berman (musician)

Josh Berman (born September 24, 1972 in Chicago ) is an American jazz musician ( cornet , trumpet ).

Life

Berman began playing cornet in high school in 1989; When he began his studies at Columbia College in 1990, he initially planned to study film. Through Weasel Walter he came into contact with the Chicago free jazz scene. He had his first trumpet lessons with Brad Goode , who persuaded him to continue his studies at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn . From 1994 he studied social work and music at the Western Illinois University in Macomb. After returning to Chicago in 1998, he first played with Dave McDonnell , Aram Shelton , Jason Adasiewicz and Mike Reed . in the following years with Jeb Bishop , Keefe Jackson , Fred Lonberg-Holm , Frank Rosaly and with the Exploding Star Orchestra . With Mike Reed he leads the formations Emerging Improvisers and Umbrella Collective . In 2009 he presented his debut album Old Idea on Delmark Records , on which u. a. Jason Adasiewicz participated; There Now followed in 2012 . In Germany he performed with Achim Tang and Georg Wissel . You can also hear it on Peter A. Schmid's album Chicago Conversations (2015).
