Mike Reed

Mike Reed (* 1974 in Bielefeld ) is an American jazz - drummer , bandleader , composer and music organizer.

Live and act

Reed grew up in Evanston, Illinois ; in nearby Chicago he played in the local jazz scene with the bands Treehouse Project, David Boykin Expanse , Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra , Fred Anderson and the Josh Berman Quartet. He led the groups Loose Assembly and Mike Reed's People, Places & Things with whom he recorded a number of albums on the 482 Music label . In 2010 he recorded the album Empathetic Paths with guest soloist Roscoe Mitchell .

In 2001 he founded the non-profit Emerging Improvisers Organization , which sponsors regular jazz and improvisation concerts in Chicago; he also worked for the Umbrella Music organization . In 2009 he became vice chairman of the AACM . He was involved in the planning of the Chicago Jazz Festival , the Downtown Sound concert series in Millennium Park. Reed is the director of the Pitchfork Music Festival , which attracted over 50,000 people to Chicago with its three-day program of pop and rock musicians.

Awards

Reed was named Chicagoan of the Year for Jazz by the Chicago Tribune in 2008 ; the Downbeat Critics poll voted him a Rising Jazz Star , his band People, Places & Things a Rising Jazz Group .
