background

Stories and Negotiations is the final chapter in the People, Places & Things trilogy by Chicago-based drummer Mike Reed. Reed made his debut with Proliferation (482 Music) in 2008 and formed his quartet of the same name "to explore an often overlooked period in Chicago's jazz history - mid-1950s to early 1960s - as the city's after-work jam session culture flirted with avant-garde collectivism and eventually gave birth to the AACM , ”noted Troy Collins. The quartet includes bassist Jason Roebke and the alto / tenor saxophone duo of Greg Ward and Tim Haldeman . The main band was expanded to include trombonist Jeb Bishop .

Usually PP&T takes the form of a quartet, but for this particular project the core has been expanded. The concert recording, recorded live in Chicago's Millennium Park in 2008, features a mix of venerable covers and compositional dedications that demonstrate the expansion of the jazz tradition, Collins wrote. From the "exotic boasting" of Sun Ras "El is a Sound of Joy" to the "blazing bop" of Clifford Jordan's "Lost and Found", Reed's expanded unit explores a handful of obscure vintage songs (the rest of the tracks were by Julian Priester, Wilbur Campbell and John Jenkins ) who swing with a straightforwardness unheard of on his previous albums. To avoid nostalgia, the set includes three original compositions by Reed and Ward, written “in the tradition”, with a title dedicated to each guest artist. These were Ira Sullivan (tenor saxophone), Art Hoyle (trumpet and flugelhorn) and trombonist Julian Priester .

John Jenkins ' "Song of a Star" first appeared on the album Coolin' by Teddy Charles (New Jazz, 1957); "Wilbur's Tune," written by Wilbur Campbell, based on Nicky's Tune by the Ira Sullivan Quintet ( Delmark , 1958). Julian Priester's “Urnack” appeared in 1967 on Angels and Demons at Play by Le Sun Ra and His Arkistra , to which Priester belonged at the time. "El Is a Sound of Joy" by Sun Ra is a track from Arkestra's 1957 album Super-Sonic Jazz . "Lost and Found" (not to be confused with the Fats-Waller number) comes from Lee Morgan's album Expoobident ( Vee Jay , 1960).

reception

According to Troy Collins, who awarded the album four stars in All About Jazz , Reed's background as festival organizer and vice chairman of the AACM gives this concert recording a great deal of authority. His imaginative choice of staff from several generations to run a unique program of forgotten material is a prime example of his organizational skills. " Stories and Negotiations is a living celebration of jazz history and a fitting end to Reed's exploration of the fertile post-war years in Chicago."

Also in All About Jazz , Martin Longley wrote that this third album by Mike Reeds People, Places & Things "takes its position as the most direct manifestation of the combo's agreed purpose." Reed's concept of reacting to vintage sounds via the platform of a modern band cannot be reproduced. This is one of the most dynamic young ensembles of modern times, supported by three old masters. It is a unique meeting of generations, the author sums up, "which causes the listener to wonder in which surprising new direction the PP&T mission will take them next time."
