David Boykin

David Boykin (* around 1970) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( saxophone , clarinet , bass clarinet , also vocals , drums ), composer and university lecturer .

Life

David Boykin began playing the clarinet at the age of 21; From the mid-1990s he worked in the jazz scene of Chicago in the environment of the AACM and the Velvet Lounge from Fred Anderson . At the end of the decade he founded the formation David Boykin Outet , in which u. a. Nicole Mitchell and Chad Taylor played. In 2001 he recorded the duo album The Nextspiritmental Musics of Saxophonist David Boykin with percussionist Bakari Davis . He also participated in the recordings of Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble . In the early 2010s he led the formation Expanse , in which he played with Nicole Mitchell, Josh Abrams and Jim Baker . In 2020 he released a CD on which he performed lyrics by Sun Ra ( Boykin Reads Sun Ra ). Boykin is a professor at Roosevelt University Chicago and director of the Creative Music Ensemble at the DuSable Leadership Academy in Chicago.
