Fats Heard
Eugene M. "Fats" Heard (* 10. October 1923 in Cleveland , Ohio ; † 5. December 1987 ) was an American jazz - drummer .
Fats Heard first played the piano and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music , but switched to drums. Early in his career in the late 1940s, he played with Coleman Hawkins and Lionel Hampton . He became known from 1952 as a member of the trio of the pianist Erroll Garner through his playing with the broom in recordings such as " Misty ". In the mid-1950s he left the music business to work as a television salesman. In later years he performed in his hometown of Cleveland in the local jazz club Cotton Club , which he eventually bought and renamed Modern Jazz Room . Erroll Garner and the trumpeter Jack Teagarden also performed there.
