Avery "Kid" Howard (born April 22, 1908 in New Orleans , Louisiana , † March 18, 1966 in New Orleans) was an American trumpeter and singer of New Orleans jazz .

Kid Howard began playing drums as a teenager, then switched to cornet and eventually trumpet after playing with Chris Kelly . In New Orleans he was a member of the Eureka Brass Band , the Allen's Brass Band and the Tuxedo Brass Band in the 1920s . He also led his own formations around 1930; his band then played at Buddy Petit's funeral . From 1938 to 1943 he worked in the orchestra of the Palace Theater ; In 1943 he made recordings with the clarinetist George Lewis . In 1946 he led the Original Zenith Brass Band , then only worked in local bands for the next few years. In 1952 he played again with Lewis, with whom he worked until 1961, as well as with Kid Sheik Cola . The quality of his last recordings with Lewis suffered from his alcohol problems, with which he had to struggle. In 1961 he fell ill and had to leave Lewis' band; after his recovery he led his own formation again until 1965 and recorded a few albums. He then performed in the Preservation Hall and other locations in New Orleans.
