American Music Records was an American record label of New Orleans jazz .

History of the record label

American Music was founded by Bill Russell in the early 1940s ; his place of business was his home in his hometown of Canton, Missouri ; Russell moved to New Orleans in the early 1960s . Russell had worked as an avant-garde and classical composer in the 1930s, influenced a. a. by John Cage . Under the influence of jazz music from New Orleans, he ended his activities as a composer and worked as a producer from then on. Russell recorded for the catalog of American Music et al. a. New Orleans jazz artists such as Kid Howard , Bunk Johnson , George Lewis and Jim Robinson . Russell only published them in very small editions and did not re-press them, so that his red vinyl 78s were very popular in London, among other places , as early as the 1950s. After the phase of the 78s he brought a number of long-playing records onto the market until 1957. Re-releases of the company appeared in the 1970s on the Danish label Storyville Records .

Around 1988 Russell sold the label to George H. Buck , who incorporated it into his GHB / Jazzology Records label and released the recordings on compact disc. In addition to Russell's original recordings, Buck also made historical recordings of New Orleans jazz that had previously been released on other labels such as Icon Records.
