Chris Kelly (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chris Kelly (* 1890 in Deer Range Plantation, Plaquemines Parish , Louisiana , † August 19, 1929 in New Orleans ) was an influential American trumpeter and band leader of New Orleans jazz . Like Buddy Bolden and Buddy Petit , he is considered one of the legendary pioneers of the jazz trumpet .

Kelly came to New Orleans in 1915, where he played in the clarinetist Johnny Brown's band, which he eventually took over. In the 1920s he played at Perseverance Hall with George Lewis . He was considered one of the leading cornetists in New Orleans in the 1920s, best known for his interpretation of Careless Love , which influenced Louis Armstrong . He was an alcoholic and died young of a heart attack in a hospital in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans.

There are no recordings of him, which was mainly due to the fact that he did not leave New Orleans like other contemporary jazz musicians for the big cities of the north of the USA.
