Big Fletchit

Big Fletchit (born May 16, 1916 in Colón , Panama as Owen Campbell ; † September 15, 1983 in Düsseldorf ) was a jazz drummer who played in Germany for many years.

Fletchit has been playing jazz since she was 12; he was soon performing with jazz greats from Panama , including the orchestra of saxophonist Frank J. Jeanmarie, and was a member of George Maycock y su Chimbombo in the 1940s . His nickname alludes to the outward resemblance to the Panamanian tap dancer "Steppin 'Fletchit". He came to Europe in 1949 with Jaime Camino's dance and music show, which also included George Maycock's band . He joined George Maycock's “Chic Combo” and met his second wife Ruth in Hamburg , with whom he then lived in Düsseldorf. From the mid-1950s he played in the George Maycock quintet or trio until the band leader's death. In 1976 Campbell founded his “Panorama” trio with Jürgen Dahmen and Wally Böcker . In addition to his work as a drummer, he composed jazz tracks and hits for Mona Baptiste, among others . He was known by fans as the "German Gene Krupa ".
