Chris Columbus (musician)
Joseph Christopher Columbus Morris (* 17th June 1902 in Greenville , Pitt County , North Carolina ; † 20th August 2002 in New Jersey ) was an American jazz - drummer and bandleader.
Chris Columbus was an active musician from the 1920s to the 1970s; he was the father of the drummer Sonny Payne . From the 1930s to the end of the 1940s he led his own formations with which he a. a. also performed in New York's Savoy Ballroom . In the mid-1940s he played for Al Sears and from 1946 for Louis Jordan , with whom he stayed until 1952. That year he played u. a. also in Benny Carter's orchestra. In the early 1950s, Columbus was a member of Wild Bill Davis' organ trio with Bill Jennings ; In 1967 he took part in recordings of Duke Ellington Orchestra with (Studio Sessions, Vol. 8) . In the 1970s he again had his own formations; he also toured Europe with Wild Bill Davis. In France he worked with Al Gray , Milt Buckner and Floyd Smith .
In some discographical references he was sometimes referred to as Joe Morris ; However, he is not to be confused with the jazz musicians of the same name Joe Morris (trumpeter) or Joe Morris (guitarist) .
