Joe Morris (Trumpeter)

Joe Morris (born January 1, 1922 in Montgomery / Alabama , † November 1, 1958 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American jazz trumpeter and band leader.

Life

Morris began his career with musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie , Milt Buckner , Arnett Cobb , Johnny Griffin , Buddy Rich (1956) and Earl Bostic . He worked as composer, arranger and trumpeter for Lionel Hampton from 1941 to 1946 , for whom he arranged his own compositions "Chop Chop" and "Punch and Judy". He then founded the Joe Morris Orchestra . In his band u. a. Musicians like Johnny Griffin, Elmo Hope , Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones . He also made records with Dinah Washington ("Evil Gal Blues", I Know How to Do It ", 1943).

He then signed a contract with Atlantic Records , and his track Anytime, Any Place, Anywhere reached number one on the Rhythm and Blues chart in 1950. The Joe Morris Orchestra became the unofficial house band of Atlantic and played a.o. a. Recordings with Ray Charles and Lowell Fulson . In 2003–05 his recordings were reissued in three albums.

Joe Morris should not be confused with the guitarist Joe Morris (* 1959).
