Matthew Gee

Matthew Gee (* 25. November 1925 in Houston , Texas ; † 18th July 1979 in New York City ) was an American jazz - trombone . He played with Duke Ellington's orchestra from 1959 to 1963 .

Matthew Gee first played the trumpet, then the tenor saxophone and finally the trombone during his musical training, which he found under the impression of Trummy Young . He played with Erskine Hawkins (1943), with Dizzy Gillespie (1946), Joe Morris (1947-48) and (1949) again with Gillespie. In 1950 he was a member of the band of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt , in 1951 he worked with Coleman Hawkins , 1952 with Count Basie and from the end of 1952 with Illinois Jacquet , with whom he toured Europe in October 1954. In 1954 Gee played in a sextet formation with Lou Donaldson . Gee then worked with Sarah Vaughan in 1956, and again with Gillespie a year later. In 1956 he created an album under his own name for Riverside Records .

In 1959 he became a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, where he was involved in the recording of the definitive album Blues In Orbit . The connection with Ellington lasted until 1963. In the 1960s he was still involved in big band projects by Sonny Stitt and Johnny Griffin . After that, Matthew Gee fell into oblivion, although he still performed in jazz clubs.
