Prince Lasha (as William B. Lawsha ; born September 10, 1929 in Fort Worth , Texas , † December 12, 2008 in Oakland , California ) was an American musician ( alto saxophone , flute ) of avant-garde jazz .

Ornette Coleman was one of Lasha's first partners; they already knew each other from school. He later played with Harold Land . He moved to Oakland , where he met Sonny Simmons , with whom he went to New York City and can also be heard on a record by Eric Dolphy ( Conversations or Musical Prophet: The Expanded 1963 New York Studio Sessions ). Simmons and he jointly managed the band "Fire Birds", also with Bobby Hutcherson and Charles Moffett senior is documented on disk. From 1965 Lasha lived in Europe for two years, where he also played with Steve Lacy , Paul Bley , Attila Zoller , Gary Peacock and Barry Altschul . In the 1970s he recorded with the sextet of Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison . He also worked with John Carter , King Curtis, and Dewey Redman .
