Dink Johnson
Dink Johnson (born October 28, 1892 as Ollie Johnson in Biloxi , Mississippi , † November 29, 1954 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American jazz musician who played drums , clarinet and piano in the Dixieland style .
Life
Johnson, the brother of jazz bassist Bill Johnson , was in 1911 with the original Creole Orchestra , in which Freddie Keppard played as a drummer and pianist on tour and after Los Angeles . In 1913 he left the orchestra in California to play with Jelly Roll Morton , before he founded his own band in 1917, the Louisiana Six , in which Kid Ory also played , after he had also learned to play the clarinet .
He later played the clarinet with Kid Ory and took part in the first recordings of a colored New Orleans band in 1921 for the Sunshine Record Company . He then lived in Los Angeles and was only "rediscovered" in 1945 by William Russell when he was playing piano in his bar. This led to solo recordings and those with a trio (1947), sometimes with their own trick drum accompaniment.
Johnson, who died in 1954, was considered a very good ragtime player who based his piano style on his mentor Morton.
