Holy Cross Church Stuttgart-Sommerrain

The Holy Cross Church in the Sommerrain district in the Stuttgart district of Bad Cannstatt was consecrated on March 29, 1998 as the last Catholic church in the 20th century in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart by Bishop Walter Kasper.

The planning and design was in the hands of Wolfgang Liese-Grässer (architecture), Bernhard Huber (art glazing) and Rudolf Kurz (chancel). At the end of the 20th century, artists chose the materials steel, concrete and glass that shaped this era. The building is made of reinforced concrete, and the ambo and tabernacle as well as parts of the altar are made of steel ; the ambo of the previous building is the cornerstone of the parish garden today. The 15 meter high, triangular roof of the church is designed asymmetrically, it rises from the lowest point at the main entrance and reaches its maximum height of around 15 meters above the chancel. The sober and cold-looking materials steel and concrete are bathed in a bright, friendly, white and blue light inside the church through the colorful glass windows . The steel cross protruding through the round window of the facade into the church interior deliberately disturbs the harmony of the room. It is intended as a reminder that man must also experience suffering, illness and death in his life. But a line that runs from the center of the round window under the baptismal font, down the aisle to the altar, to the cross and through the Resurrection window to the top of the roof, points to redemption through Christ. Priests of the Holy Cross community were Alois Rölli (1946–1963), Walter Hetzel (1963–1993), Michael HF Brock (1994–2001), Karl – Hanns Haas (2001–2008) and Oliver Lahl (2010–2017) .

Ludwig Mattes has been the lead pastor of the “Stuttgarter Madonna” pastoral care unit since February 1, 2017 and has his residence in the Heilig Kreuz rectory in Sommerrain.

In the spring of 2020, the church building underwent basic maintenance. This included, among other things, the conversion of the entire lighting to LED technology, extensive painting work in the interior and the final construction of the organ. The organ was built in 1998 by Richard Rensch Orgelbau , Lauffen am Neckar. It has 2 manuals and after the final expansion 16 stops.
