The 1993 US Cup was an invitational tournament for national soccer teams organized by the United States Soccer Association and ran from June 6 to June 19, 1993. Besides the host team , participants were Brazil , Germany and England . For the visiting teams it was the only appearance in this tournament series . After six games in the “everyone against everyone” mode , the then reigning world champion Germany was the winner. The decisive final game, Germany against England, took place in the Pontiac Silverdome and was the first official international football match in a structurally enclosed stadium that was played on natural grass. This was done in preparation for the 1994 World Cup in the United States .
The host team met the then world number one Brazil in their first game. Over 44,000 spectators at the Yale Bowl saw an early goal from the favorite South Americans by Careca. Shortly before the end, Winck made the final score of 2-0 for Brazil. In their second game, the Americans beat England 2-0.
The German team started their first game against Brazil weak and were 3-0 down at halftime. After an increase in performance in the second half of the game, Germany scored their first two goals in the 66th minute through Jürgen Klinsmann and in the 80th through Andreas Möller. Klinsmann managed to equalize again in stoppage time.
In their third and final game, the Brazilians only managed a 1-1 draw against England, while the German team beat the USA 4-3 thanks to three headers from Karl-Heinz Riedle. With a 2-1 win against England in the last game, the Germans secured the tournament victory. The decisive goal was scored by Klinsmann, who was the top scorer of the tournament with a total of four goals.
