Fernando Clavijo (born January 23, 1956 in Maldonado , Uruguay , † February 8, 2019 ) was an American football player .

The former US international played for teams in the American Soccer League , North American Soccer League and the Major Indoor Soccer League . After the end of his career he worked as a trainer. Since 2012 he has been Technical Director at FC Dallas .

Player career

Clavijo grew up in Uruguay. From 1973 to 1978 he played for the Club Atlético Atenas .

He came to the USA in the late 1970s.

From 1979 to 1981 he played for New York Apollo, 1981 to 1983 for the New York Arrows and subsequently for many other clubs in the then North American Soccer League . In total, he completed 540 professional games in the USA and scored 127 goals.

Between 1990 and 1994 he played for the US national team in the very advanced football age. He made 61 international matches.

He took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA. In 1992, Clavijo was part of the US squad at the Futsal World Cup in Hong Kong, when they were runner-up by a 4-1 defeat in the final against Brazil.

Coaching career

After his playing career, he became a coach. From 2000 to 2002 he coached the New England Revolution and from 2003 to 2005 he coached the Haiti national team .

From 2005 to 2008 he was the coach of the Colorado Rapids in the MLS (Major League Soccer). He then coached Miami FC .
