Theo Wolvecamp

Theo Wolvecamp (born August 30, 1925 in Hengelo ; † October 11, 1992 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter and member of the artist group CoBrA .

life and work

Wolvecamp was born in 1925 as the son of a tailor . After the death of his father, Theo Wolvecamp grew up in 1934 with his uncle, a gamekeeper . Impressed by the Expressionists and Kandinsky's book On the Spiritual in Art. He found his artistic direction particularly in painting . He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem , left it after a short time and went to Amsterdam in 1947. Corneille , Karel Appel and Constant became aware of Theo Wolvecamp. In 1948 they founded the Experimentele Groep in Holland , which was later expanded to CoBrA. Theo Wolvecamp's closeness to nature brought him back to Overijssel after stays in Paris and Amsterdam .

Theo Wolvecamp's former living space in Hengelo is now the Lambooijhuis , a center for art and artists.
