Corneille

Corneille (actually Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo ; born July 3, 1922 in Liège ; † September 5, 2010 in Auvers-sur-Oise ) was a Dutch painter , sculptor , poet and a co-founder of the artist group CoBrA .

Life

Corneille was born the son of Dutch parents in the Belgian born Liege. He grew up in the Netherlands and studied at the Reichsakademie der Bildenden Künste from 1940 to 1943 . In 1946 he had his first solo exhibition in Groningen, in 1947 he joined the artist movement Reflex with Karel Appel and Constant Nieuwenhuys . A year later the three artists left the movement and founded the group CoBrA with other neo-expressionists. In 1949 he traveled to Tunisia; it was the first of many long trips to Africa, and later to Asia and the American continent. In 1950 Corneille moved to Paris , where he lived and worked until his death. Corneille began to work with etchings and ceramics in Paris .

Corneille had an expressive and quick style, albeit much finer than his colleagues in the CoBrA group. When the group broke up, his technique also changed. His travels to other continents were reflected in his middle and late working phases. He dealt extensively with the local landscapes and cultures. His pictures developed a strong colourfulness and had a much more reduced structure. Cormeilles had abandoned the impetuous painting style of the CoBrA period. The pictures now had a calm and clear style. The artist retained the simple drawing technique and the reduction of perspective and shadows.

After the trip to Cuba in 1967, his work was given a new lyrical expression and a symbolic imagery that he used until his death. Recurring symbols in his pictures (woman, bird, palm) are typical for this phase.

Alongside Karel Appel, he is considered the most important post-war artist from the Benelux countries. His works can be found in the Stedelijk Museum ( Amsterdam ) and the Cobra Museum ( Amstelveen ) , among others . A very large part of his works are in private collections. Corneille was a participant in documenta II (1959) and documenta III in 1964 in Kassel .
