Gary Roland Mills (born November 11, 1961 in Northampton ) is a former English football player and current coach. As a player, he won the 1979/80 European Cup with Nottingham Forest .
Player career
Nottingham Forest, Seattle Sounders and Derby County (1978–1987)
Gary Mills made his debut at the age of only 16 on September 9, 1978 for Nottingham Forest in the Football League First Division 1978/79 . In the further course of the season he played three more games (one goal) and ended the season with his team as runner-up. Forest also won the title in the 1978/79 European Cup (1-0 against Malmö FF ) without Gary Mills, who was not in the squad . In addition to thirteen games (one goal) in the 1979/80 season , the 18-year-old midfielder was nominated by coach Brian Clough for the final of the 1979/80 European Cup . Mills was used from the start, before he was replaced in the 67th minute for John O'Hare . Nottingham won the game 1-0 against Hamburger SV and thus defended its title in the national championship cup. After two more seasons in Nottingham , he moved to the NASL to the Seattle Sounders and played thirty-four games (five hits) in the USA. After a stopover on loan at the English second division club Derby County , Gary Mills returned to Nottingham in December 1983.
In the Football League First Division 1984/85 he played twenty-six league games and scored four goals. After two more seasons with a total of forty-one league appearances, he left the club for the second time and moved on August 14, 1987 to city rivals Notts County .
Notts County and Leicester City (1987-1996)
Mills played with County (46 games / 5 goals) in 1987/88 in the third division and just barely missed promotion to the second division as fourth. Before the end of the Football League Third Division 1988/89, the 27-year-old moved to Leicester City on March 2, 1989 . In Leicester Mills established himself in the following five years as a regular player in the second division. In the 1991/92 season he reached the play-offs with City as fourth in the table, but lost the final game with 0-1 against Blackburn Rovers after a success over Cambridge United . A year later, the club failed again in the play-off final, this time 3: 4 against Swindon Town . In the third play-off final in a row Leicester City succeeded on May 30, 1994 with 2-1 against Derby County promotion to the Premier League .
After only one game in the Premier League in 1994/95 , 32-year-old Gary Mills moved to Notts County , for which he had already played from 1987 to 1989. With County, Mills rose at the end of the season as bottom of the table from the second division. In the 1995/96 season he reached the play-offs with his team as fourth in the table, but lost in the final 2-0 to Bradford City . After the season he ended his playing career at the age of 34, but was still active for various amateur clubs in the following years.
Coaching career
After he had previously coached three amateur clubs, Gary Mills took over on January 7, 2004 the coaching post at the third division Notts County , for which he had already been active as a player. At the end of the 2003/04 season he rose with County as penultimate in the newly founded fourth-rate Football League Two . After also unsatisfactory performance in the new division, Mills was released on November 4, 2004.
On October 13, 2010 he took over the English fifth division team York City . After an eighth place in the table in the first season, Mills led his team to fourth place in the 2011/12 season and achieved promotion to fourth-rate Football League Two after a success in the play-off final over Luton Town . Eight days earlier, the club had secured the FA Trophy with a 2-0 final over AFC Newport County .
On March 2, 2013, Mills was fired as the fourth division coach.
