Robert Dennis "Sammy" Chapman (born August 18, 1946 in Aldridge ) is a former English football player .

Player career

Nottingham Forest (1963-1977)

Sammy Chapman made his debut on January 18, 1964 at the age of seventeen in the Football League First Division 1963/64 for the English first division club Nottingham Forest , but came to no further league use during the season. In the following three years he remained the role of a supplementary player, his first league goal he succeeded on December 19, 1964 in a 3-2 home win over West Ham United. In 1966/67 the 20-year-old defender (9 games / 2 goals) won the runner-up with his team behind Manchester United around Bobby Charlton , Denis Law and George Best . From the following season 1967/68 he was used more regularly, but the performance of the club deteriorated significantly. In the 1971/72 season , Sammy Chapman (34 league games) rose with Forest for the first time since 1957 back in the second division. Only under the new coaching duo Brian Clough and Peter Taylor did the club return to the First Division in 1977 after five years in the second division. Sammy Chapman played thirty-two league games (two goals) before leaving the club after the end of the season and over thirteen years.

Notts County and Shrewsbury Town (1977–1980)

The 1977/78 season he spent with Forests city rivals Notts County in the second division, before moving to Shrewsbury Town in 1978 and won the championship in the third division Football League Third Division with his new team in 1979 . After the second division relegation in the 1979/80 season, he let his playing career end at the lower class club Burton Albion .
