Walsall is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county West Midlands in England . The administrative center is the city of the same name, Walsall , where around two thirds of the population live. Other significant places in the district are Aldridge , Bloxwich , Brownhills , Darlaston , Streetly , Walsall Wood and Willenhall .
The current boundaries of the Metropolitan Borough were established on April 1, 1974 as part of a far-reaching local reform. The former county borough of Walsall was merged with the Aldridge-Brownhills Urban District in Staffordshire .
In 1986 Walsall became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the superordinate administration of Metropolitan County West Midlands. Walsall is part of the West Midlands for ceremonial purposes and also for individual higher-level functions such as police , fire brigade and public transport.
