Dudley is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county West Midlands in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Dudley , in which around two thirds of the population live. Other significant places in the district are Amblecote , Brierley Hill , Coseley , Halesowen , Kingswinford , Sedgley and Stourbridge .
The town of Dudley was originally an exclave of Worcestershire , while the surrounding villages were part of Staffordshire . However, these were incorporated in 1966 and Dudley came to the county of Staffordshire. The current boundaries of the district were set on April 1, 1974 as part of a far-reaching local reform. The former county borough of Dudley was merged with the boroughs of Halesowen and Stourbridge.
In 1986, Dudley became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the West Midlands county administration. Dudley remained part of the West Midlands for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level duties such as police , fire and public transport.
