Tony Hateley (born June 13, 1941 in Derby , † February 1, 2014 in Preston , Lancashire ) was an English football player .

Career

Hateley began his professional career with Notts County in 1958. In Nottingham , the striker played for five years and scored 77 league goals. In 1963 he moved to Aston Villa in Birmingham . In three years with the Villans, he was used 127 times in championship games and scored 68 goals there. After these successful games he was signed by Chelsea in 1966 for the then record sum of 100,000 pounds. Hateley had to replace the injured Peter Osgood , which the Englishman could not do. His biggest problem with the Blues was that he wasn't fed the crosses he needed to be a strong header player. In June 1967 it was sold to Liverpool FC for £ 96,000 . After his time with the Reds, Hateley played a year at Coventry City and a year at Birmingham City . In 1970 he returned to his home club Notts County. In 1973 he moved to a professional club for the last time. He played for a year at Oldham Athletic , including briefly in 1974 for the Boston Minutemen in the USA.

His son is the former English national soccer player and now coach Mark Hateley .
