Simon Nicholas Grayson (born December 16, 1969 in Ripon , England ) is a former English football player and current coach. As a player, he was active between 1988 and 2005 for Leicester City , Aston Villa and Blackpool FC, among others .

Player career

Simon Grayson, who comes from his own youth department, started his playing career in 1988 with the English first division club Leeds United . However, the defender failed to prevail against high-profile competition such as Chris Fairclough , Tony Dorigo and Mel Sterland . After only two league games in just under four years, he moved to Leicester City in March 1992. Meanwhile, Leeds won the championship title in the 1991/92 season .

With his new team he spent the following two years in the English second division. In the 1993/94 season Leicester City reached by a 2-1 win in the play-off final against Derby County promotion to the 1992 newly introduced Premier League . The return to the first class was initially limited to one year, because City rose as the penultimate again directly from the Premier League 1994/95 . But also the restart in the second division ended after only one year with the direct promotion. Again the club won the play-off final, this time 2-1 against Crystal Palace . The renewed attempt in the Premier League in 1996/97 was much more successful this time. The team trained by Martin O'Neill since 1995 around Grayson, Kasey Keller and Emile Heskey finished ninth in the table and also won the League Cup title against Middlesbrough FC . Despite these successes, Simon Grayson left the club and joined league rivals Aston Villa for £ 1.3m .

After a seventh place with Villa in the 1997/98 Premier League , Grayson played for the first time in international competition the following year. Aston Villa, however, failed in the second round of the 1998/99 UEFA Cup against Spanish representatives Celta Vigo . This was followed by further positions from 1999 to 2002 with the Blackburn Rovers and from 2002 to 2005 with the third division club FC Blackpool .

Coaching career

Blackpool FC

On November 10, 2005, Simon Grayson took over the coaching post of the Seasiders in Blackpool. Grayson, who was team captain for the club until June 2005, replaced his predecessor and former coach Colin Hendry . After securing relegation in 2005/06, he led his team to third place in the third division Football League One in the 2006/07 season . In the subsequent play-off final Blackpool defeated in Wembley fifth-placed Yeovil Town 2: 0 and returned with it after 30 years again in the second highest English Game class. The return to the second division could be celebrated in the Football League Championship 2007/08 with the relegation just achieved. In the course of the 2008/09 season , Simon Grayson ended his three years coaching activity in Blackpool and took over the vacant coaching position at Leeds United .

Leeds United

Gary McAllister had previously been dismissed from the traditional club from Leeds . Grayson led the club to fourth place in the third-rate Football League One during the season . In the subsequent play-offs , however, the team failed at Fifth Millwall FC . In the 2009/10 season it went better for the team and by a second place behind third division champions Norwich City United rose to the Football League Championship . The new season in the Football League Championship 2010/11 was successful for the promoted team. Leeds reached seventh place in the table and thus missed a place in the play-offs. During the 2011/12 season, Grayson was released on February 1, 2012. United was tenth in the table at this time and the board saw the hoped-for promotion endangered after recent changing results.

Huddersfield Town

On February 20, 2012, Simon Grayson took over the coaching post at third division Huddersfield Town and led the club after a success in the play-off final of Football League One 2011/12 in the second division. After a good start in the 2012/13 Football League Championship, the team's performance deteriorated significantly over the course of the season before Grayson was fired on January 24, 2013.

Preston North End

Less than a month after his release in Huddersfield, Grayson was introduced on February 18, 2013 as the new coach of third division Preston North End . In Football League One 2013/14 , he led the club as fifth in the play-offs, but failed prematurely at Rotherham United . A season later he moved with Preston again in the play-offs and achieved promotion to the second division by a 4-0 final win against Swindon Town . Also in the Football League Championship 2015/16 he was able to act successfully with the promoted team and secure relegation as eleventh in the table. After another season in the middle of the table, he decided to leave the club and move to Sunderland AFC.

Sunderland AFC

On June 29, 2017, the Premier League relegated AFC Sunderland announced the commitment of Simon Grayson. After only 18 competitive games and only one win from 15 league games, Grayson was released at the end of October 2017.

Bradford City

In February 2018, Grayson took over the coaching position at third division club Bradford City . He became the first coach to oversee the three major West Yorkshire clubs - Bradford City, Huddersfield Town and Leeds United. Grayson left the club at the end of the season when his contract expired. Previously, he had only won three of 14 league games and the club, which was considered a candidate for promotion at the time of his takeover, ended the season in 11th place.

Blackpool FC

On July 6, 2019, Grayson was introduced as the successor to Terry McPhillips at Blackpool. Grayson was with the club in fourth place in the table in mid-December 2019, before a series of just one win from twelve games ensured that he was dismissed on February 12, 2020 in 15th place.
