David William Needham (born May 21, 1949 in Leicester , England ) is a retired English football player , who was best known in his years with Notts County and Nottingham Forest . With Forest he won the English championship in 1978 and the European Cup of National Champions in 1978/79 and 1980 .

Player career

Notts County

David Needham started his playing career in 1966 with Notts County . The club played at that time in the fourth English division and could not qualify for a higher division in the following four years. It was not until the 1970/71 season that the team with David Needham was promoted to the third division. Two years later, the leap into the second English division took place. In this league he spent four years with the club from Nottingham before moving to the Queens Park Rangers in the First Division in 1977 . The best season at Notts County he spent in the 1975/76 season with fifth place and a barely missed first division promotion.

Nottingham Forest

David Needham spent the first half of the season at the club from Hammersmith and Fulham and completed 18 first division appearances. After half a year in London, however, he returned to the East Midlands and signed in December 1977 with the first division newcomer Nottingham Forest . Needham immediately played in the team and won with Forest under coach Brian Clough as a promoted English championship in the First Division 1977/78 . This was followed by the most successful time in Needham's career, because in the following two years he triumphed in the European Cup in 1978/79 and 1979/80 . A 1-0 win over Malmö FF or Hamburger SV was enough to win the title. In addition, the team won the English league cup in 1978 and 1979. David Needham was often used during this time, but could not win a regular place. In the two finals of the national championship cup, coach Brian Clough did not bet on Needham.

In 1982 he joined for one last season to Canada for the NASL playing Toronto Blizzard .
