Heel ( listen ? / I ) is a place and a former municipality in the south of the Netherlands in the province of Limburg . Audio file / audio sample

Heel is located on the western bank of the Maas just a few kilometers southwest of the city of Roermond and 35 km northwest of Maastricht on the A 2 and N 273. The distance to Belgium is about 4.5 km, and that to Germany a good 12 km.

Railway stations are in the neighboring cities of Roermond , Weert and Echt ; the nearest regional airports are in the cities of Maastricht and Eindhoven .

Sights of the still heavily agricultural community include the windmill St. Lintermolen and the surge in the adjacent Thorn .

The private accommodations in the municipality are particularly popular with German short vacationers and water sports enthusiasts who use the numerous neighboring sports and shopping opportunities for a short trip across the border.

Community merger

The former municipality of Heel merged with the municipalities of Maasbracht and Thorn to form the municipality of Maasgouw on January 1, 2007 .

The municipality of Heel itself was created in 1991 from the merger of the formerly independent municipalities Heel en Panheel , Beegden and Wessem . The municipality had 8,326 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2006) and an area of 25.36 km².

Town twinning

Between 1972 and 2008 there was a partnership between the municipality of Heel and Seligenstadt in Hesse , which emerged from the partnership between the then independent municipalities of Wessem and Klein-Welzheim . The partnership was dissolved in Seligenstadt in March 2008 at the request of the Maasgouw municipality, to which Heel was transferred in 2007.
