The Porvoonjoki [ ˈpɔrvɔːnjɔki ] ( Swedish Borgå å ) is a river in southern Finland . It rises on the southern slope of the Salpausselkä ridge and flows into the Gulf of Finland near the town of Porvoo .

The Porvoonjoki has several springs, which are located at Lahti , Hollola and Kärkölä . After its source, the river flows south via Orimattila , Pukkila and Askola to Porvoo, where it flows into the sea. The length of the river is 143 km, its catchment area measures 1,271 km². The difference in height between the source and the mouth is 68 m. The river has several rapids, almost all of which have been harnessed for hydropower. The largest rapids are the Strömsberginkoski near Porvoo. The water quality of Porvoonjoki is rather poor because of the feeding in of sewage.

The Porvoonjoki valley, with its alternation of agricultural plains and gently undulating moraines, is one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Finland. On the banks of the river, old villages with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries and manors have been preserved. Together with the old town of Porvoo, the Porvoonjoki valley is one of the 27 official national landscapes of Finland .
