A dental assistant has the task of assisting the dentist in treating patients and organizing the practice. The job title in Germany is "Zahnmedizinische / r Fachangestelte / r". In Switzerland, the job title is dental assistant . Approx. 99% of dental professionals are women.

In the GDR the job title for the former dental assistant was "Stomatological Sister" .

Germany

Increase in male trainees for the profession of dental assistant from 2000 to 2011

In 2011, 10,834 new training contracts were concluded in Germany. In 2012, there was an increase to 12,330 new training contracts (+ 4.11%). On the ranking list of apprenticeships after new degrees in Germany, the apprenticeship occupation ranks 14th.

The number of male trainees to become dental assistants is increasing. In the period from 2000 to 2011, the number of male trainees quadrupled. The proportion of women is 99.3 percent. On the popularity scale of the most popular apprenticeship occupations among young women, the occupation was ranked 7th in 2011 (that of medical assistants, on the other hand, ranked 4th).

Previous school education for trainees

Basically, no qualifying previous education is necessary for training. However, preference is given to applicants with a qualified secondary school leaving certificate or better. In the case of newly concluded training contracts (as of December 31, 2011), trainees to become dental assistants had the following prior training.

The previous designation dental assistant was abolished with the adoption of the new occupational profile in 2001.

The training is based on the regulation on vocational training for dental assistants (ZFA) . The knowledge is imparted in a dual system at the vocational school and in the dental practice. The training period is three years, but can be shortened by up to one year. In Germany, every dental practice is basically entitled to train. In 2011 around 41% of the dental practices provided training.

As part of the training, knowledge is imparted about

  • Basic knowledge of accounting,
  • Performing work in the dental laboratory,
  • Measures of occupational and practice hygiene,
  • occupational safety and environmental protection,
  • Handling drugs and medicinal products,
  • Dealing with provisions of social legislation and
  • Data protection , data processing and data security,
  • the health service and dental practice,
  • Information and communication systems,
  • Basic knowledge of diseases, anatomy , physiology and pathology ,
  • medical terms
  • Care of patients,
  • Use and care of medical devices and instruments,
  • Practice processes ,
  • Implementation of prophylaxis measures,
  • Application of X-rays ,
  • Assistance in the event of an incident.

Final exam 2011

In 2011, 9,678 trainees nationwide took part in the final exam to become a dental assistant, 51 of whom were male. 9,006 trainees (93.1%) passed the exam.

In 2000 there were 13,313 test subjects, of which 12,200 (91.6%) passed the test.

Training allowance

The remuneration for trainees to become dental assistants is regulated differently from region to region. As of April 1, 2016, the monthly collectively agreed training allowances for ZFA in the first year of training are e.g. B. for the states of Hamburg, Hesse and Saarland as well as for the state part of Westphalia-Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia in the 1st year of training € 750, in the 2nd year of training € 790 and in the 3rd year of training € 840.

At the end of 2011, 6142 ZFAs were registered as unemployed, a decrease of 14% compared to the previous year and 60% compared to the year 2000.

In practice, the essential tasks of a dental assistant consist in

  • Billing with health insurance companies and private patients ,
  • Training of trainees,
  • Preparation of treatments,
  • Advice and support for patients before, during and after treatment,
  • Data acquisition and management of patient data, disease reports , patient recall
  • Documentation of sterilization and hygiene processes,
  • Device maintenance and care,
  • Handing over the instruments and the assistance at the treatment chair,
  • Completion of commercial activities,
  • Creation of jaw impressions ,
  • prophylactic measures such as tartar removal or staining of teeth for child prophylaxis (only with appropriate additional training),
  • Creation of temporary dentures,
  • Implementation of quality management,
  • Cleaning and disinfection of instruments and rooms,
  • Representation of the practice and maintenance of the practice rooms,
  • Taking x-rays,
  • Making appointments and answering the phone,
  • Procurement of goods.

There are different developments in terms of career advancement , according to Dental Association :

In 2011, 785 successful exams for the ZMP, 461 for the ZMV, 315 for the ZMF and 111 for the DH were taken in front of the dental associations.

In Bavaria z. B. the further training for ZMF carried out part-time and focuses on prevention / prophylaxis. The ZMV is a further training measure in the accounting and administration area. More information is available from the dental district associations .

In Westphalia-Lippe , the Dental Association offers advanced training to become a business economist for management in health care.

In North Rhine the Dental Association offers advanced training to become an assistant in dental practice management (AZP).

In Germany, the level of remuneration for dental assistants is freely negotiated between employer and employee. In some federal states (Hesse, Hamburg, Saarland, Westphalia-Lippe) there is a collective wage agreement that is not binding, but can serve as a guide. The salary is based on the number of years in the job and the scope of the advanced training that the dental assistant has to show.

The salary according to this collective wage agreement starts at 1602, - € for the first three years of employment. It can rise to 2517, - € depending on professional experience and training. In addition, there may be additional voluntary payments, such as Christmas or vacation pay, capital-building benefits and other social benefits. The salary can depend on supply and demand and the corresponding qualifications. In cities with fewer dental assistants, salaries are higher than the collective agreements provide.

Trade association

Dental assistants are members of the professional association for health and welfare services . The statutory accident insurance is a branch of the German social security system. It represents a liability insurance for the entrepreneur - against the risks of accidents at work and occupational diseases of his employees. This is why employers alone pay contributions to statutory accident insurance.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the basic vocational training is called Dental Assistant EFZ . The training lasts three years. The training locations are companies, vocational schools and inter-company courses. The new education plan for dental assistants came into force on January 1st, 2010 together with the new education ordinance (BiVo). The cantons are responsible for enforcing this ordinance. The profession ranks seventh among the most popular apprenticeships for women.

Remuneration during training

The wages of the prospective dental assistants for apprenticeship contracts (from August 1, 2011)

  • in the 1st year of apprenticeship CHF 550,
  • in the 2nd year of apprenticeship CHF 900 and
  • in the 3rd year of apprenticeship Fr. 1300.–

Payable 13 times a year.
