Dental assistant

The dental assistant ( ZMF ) is the name for a trained dental assistant (ZAH or ZFA) in Germany, whereby the female form is mostly used due to the gender distribution in the profession. He performs qualified tasks in a dental practice after delegation within the legally permissible framework. One focus is on treatment-accompanying and supportive periodontal therapy , tooth decay prevention and oral prophylaxis .

Legal basis

The professional advancement training of the dental assistant to the dental assistant is a further training within the meaning of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) .

The advanced training requirements, the design and duration of the advanced training as well as the implementation of the examination are regulated by the responsible dental associations at the state level. These advanced training regulations are based on the model advanced training regulations dated September 3, 2003 drawn up by the German Medical Association .

The permissible delegation framework is described in a guideline of the German Dental Association , which was drawn up on the basis of the Dentistry Act (ZHG) .

Training requirements

In addition to the proof of a successfully passed final examination as a ZAH or ZFA based on the test certificate from a German Dental Association , the certificates of attendance for the successful completion of the courses Prosthetic Assistance and Basic Prophylaxis Course, proof of attending a course in first aid including cardiopulmonary Resuscitation of at least 16 hours, evidence in accordance with Section 18a (3) of the X-ray Ordinance (RöV) of the acquisition of the necessary knowledge in radiation protection, and evidence that the applicant has worked as a dental assistant for at least one or two years - depending on the dental association / ZFA), necessary further training requirements.

The advanced training includes a systematic and comprehensive advanced training measure in accordance with Section 54 BBiG with a training scope of at least 700 hours. The prerequisites for participation, the content of the training and the examination result from the state-approved examination regulations of the respective responsible dental association. The scope includes the activity in the employment practice with certification sheets with approx. 250 hours, a teaching internship with certification sheets with approx. 160 hours and a clinical internship with approx. 80 hours.

The advanced training ends with an examination consisting of a written and a practical part. The written examination can be supplemented by an oral examination, if this is the decisive factor for passing the examination.

The practical exam includes:

  • Creation of an oral hygiene status
  • Creation of an individual home oral hygiene concept with motivation and instruction
  • Fluoride history and therapy
  • Removal of soft and hard as well as clinically accessible subgingival coatings
  • Implementation of a smooth surface polish
  • Implementation of a fissure sealing
  • Execution of a final polishing of the filling
  • Manufacture of temporaries
  • Impression for the production of situation models
  • Ligation of arches in and out of the formed dental arch
  • Selection and fitting of ligaments on the patient
  • Cleaning and polishing teeth after removing stuck appliances

The examination is passed if the examinee has at least achieved sufficient performance in all examination subjects.
