Helmut Urbach (born June 17, 1942 in Cologne ) is a German marathon and ultra marathon runner who celebrated his greatest successes in the 100 km road race .

Career

In 1966 he started an ultra run for the first time and came fourth in the 100 km from Biel . The following year he achieved his first of seven victories in this race (more followed in 1969, 1973, 1974, 1977, 1979 and 1980). In 1969 he was the first runner to stay under eight hours at 7:55 h and in 1974 he was the first to stay under seven hours at 6:59:28 h.

On September 5, 1971 in Unna he set an unofficial world record over 100 km with 6:57:55 h. On May 24, 1975, he achieved a course record in the Florence – Faenza ultra run with 7:17:03 h and improved his record in the 100 km split to 6:40:03 h.

He won the Königsforst Marathon five times (1973, 1975, 1977, 1983, 1984), the first time of which he set the current course record with 2:25:46 h.

Urbach is widowed and lives in Cologne-Porz . He has been an honorary member of the German Ultramarathon Association (DUV) since 2002 .
