Königsforst Marathon

The Königsforst Marathon is a marathon in Bensberg ( Bergisch Gladbach ) near Cologne, which has been held annually in March in the Königsforst since 1973 .

organization

Organized for the first time in 1973 by LG Rhein-Berg , the Königsforst Marathon is one of the oldest marathon events in Germany. From 1978 to 2013 the marathon was organized and hosted by the non-profit association Königsforst-Marathon eV . The gymnastics club Refrath 1893 eV has been the organizer of the marathon since 2014 and the run has been a member of German Road Races since 2015 .

In addition to the 42.195 km route, a half marathon , runs over 10 km and 5 km and school runs over 1 km are also part of the program. The routes are circular courses through the royal forest on asphalt, paved roads and firm forest floor.
The route leads past Monte Troodelöh , the highest point in the city of Cologne. For the marathon, the half marathon route is run twice.

In 1974 no marathon was held here. In 1987 only a 14-kilometer run was held due to the icy track. In 2007, the forest office could not approve the run due to the damage caused by Hurricane Kyrill .

In March 2017 the Königsforst Marathon took place for the 43rd time. 1567 runners took part, 879 of them in the half marathon and 229 in the marathon.
