The Turnverein Refrath 1893 eV ( TV Refrath for short ) is a sports club from the Bergisch Gladbach district of Refrath . It was founded in 1893 and with around 2000 members is one of the largest sports clubs in the region. Of the total of 17 departments, the badminton department in particular gained supraregional importance. TV Refrath participates in the games of the German Badminton Association with several teams , for example in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga .

Badminton Department

The department was founded in 1990 and the first team was registered at the same time. Just three years later, the club was able to win its first medal at the West German Badminton Championship. In 1997, Volker Renzelmann , who himself had become German champion seven years earlier, took over the coaching position, who led the club directly from the major league to the third-class regional league for the next three years. In the following years, the TV Refrath provided more and more German champions and participants in European championships in the youth division. In 2006 the club was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . In 2008 Kim Buss became the West German champion in women's singles.

In 2009, TV Refrath was promoted to the Badminton Bundesliga , while in the same year they hosted the West German Championships. The second team has played in the 2nd Bundesliga since 2012; In addition, the internationally successful Malaysian Muhammad Hafiz Hashim was signed for the first team.

Other departments

In floorball , the club provided two players for the U-19 World Cup in 2012, in which Germany took third place. The athletics department hosted the German half marathon championships in April 2013.
