traffic
In 1870–1873 the Landwasserstrasse was built along the Landwasser River. The road leads from Brienz via Alvaneu and Schmitten, along steep slopes and through larch forests , which alternate with deeply cut valleys ( called gorges here ), to Wiesen and ends in Davos.
Attractions
The baroque church of All Saints with its splendid furnishings and the Romanesque chapel of St. Lucius with late Gothic frescoes are enthroned above the village .
From this church hill one has a memorable view over the Albula valley . From the rectory, built in 1707, follow the Way of the Cross from 1761, whose Passion Pictures have been completely renovated since 1985, up to the cemetery, which surrounds the parish church of All Saints and the Chapel of St. Lucius.
There are old ore mines near Schmitten .
Fusion of the community
As part of the municipal mergers in Graubünden , efforts were made to merge all the municipalities in the Albula Valley into a single municipality of Albula. On March 23, 2013, however, a majority of the population of Schmitten rejected this in a fundamental decision. It is now being discussed whether Schmitten should merge with the Davos community and form the seventh parliamentary community there. The former municipality of Wiesen , east of Schmitten, took this route in 2009 .
Association of Friends of Schmitten (VFvS)
The Friends of Schmitten Association has published an elaborate village chronicle every year since 1966. In addition to the annual reports of the community and the village associations, the chronicle also deals with topics that are important for a small alpine village. The editors and editors are the members of the association's board.
