history
Excavations on the group of hills "Bot da Loz" to the south-west of the town center showed that Lenz was already settled in the older Iron Age. The late Latena settlement remains from the 1st century BC. BC probably come from a Celtic guard station. The Romans used the Lenzerheide crossing for their troops and traders as a through route to the Julier and Septimer passes . In the Carolingian period "Lanzes" belonged, according to the kingdom Urbar of 831 to the Ministry Impetinis. At that time there was a royal court in Lantsch, a church and two hostels («tabernas»). Old field names indicate that the older Lantsch was right next to the Church of St. Maria and was only later relocated to the east on the through road. As one of the four ports - besides Tinizong , Bivio and Vicosoprano - on the transit route via Julier and Septimer, it was entitled to levy customs duties. Lantsch was part of the Belfort Court, which had entered the Ten Court Association in 1436.
