The Catholic parish church of St. Antonius von Lantsch / Lenz in the Swiss canton of Graubünden stands in the middle of the village on a small plateau. It is dedicated to Anthony of Padua .

history

Since the old parish church of Sta. Maria became too small and was also outside the village, the community decided, inspired by the Capuchins who were active in the village in 1656 , to build a new church in the village. On August 19, 1658 the foundation stone was laid by Father Paolo von Bienno. The master builder was Father Dominicus von Brixen , who had previously built the church of Tiefencastel , among other things . The new church was created as a vaulted room with short transverse arms. On July 1, 1663, the consecration took place by Bishop Ulrich von Federspiel.

Due to the steadily increasing mail traffic over the Julier and Albula passes from the middle of the 19th century , the church was enlarged from 1855 to 1863. The builder was Pastor Capeder. The foundation stone for the extension was laid on June 16, 1855, and it was re-consecrated on September 20, 1863 by Bishop Nicolaus Franziskus Florentini. In 1879 the tower was increased to four floors; In 1901 and 1983–85 the church was restored.

Outside

The high gable facade is divided into three sections by Tuscan pilasters and painted with cuboids in an illusionistic way. The pictures on the pages come from the time around 1860 by Johann Rizzi from Cazis : left Simon Petrus , right Paulus von Tarsus . The sides of the nave are also divided by pilasters into four areas with large arched windows on the south side. Only shallow niches are formed on the north side. The sacristy is built on the south side of the choir; across from her is the rectory. The semicircular forecourt in front of the church was laid out in 1862.

The three-bay arched nave is structured by brown and gray marbled pilasters. The windows on the south side were painted in 1902 by the glass painter Karl Holenstein from Wil ZH . The paintings in the niches of the north wall show the so-called "donkey miracle" and the fish sermon of St. Anthony and were created in the same year by the architect Gustav Dahme from Zug. The wall of the choir arch is decorated with pictures by Johann Ritzi.

The former transept of the previous building from the 17th century now forms the vestibule with a groin vault and lateral transverse barrels. The rectangular choir is separated from the vestibule by a choir arch and a three-tier pedestal. The effect of a stucco ceiling should be achieved through rich decorative paintings. A rectangular window on the south side corresponds to a painted window on the north side. The two-part organ was created in 163 by Fidel Haaser from Immenstadt im Allgäu . In 1928 it was restored and expanded.

Furnishing

Look into the choir

The cautiously designed high altar was created in 1864/65 according to plans by the architect Joseph Ettlin von Sachseln , the altar sheet with a depiction of St. Anthony was made by Master Annen von Arth.

The richly decorated golden tabernacle from the 17th century forms a contrast to this . The two side altars were donated by the long-established Summerau family. In 1757/58 the Passion Altar was created on the right side with a plastic representation of Christ on the scourge column, the left altar of the Hermit Mother of God was created in 1759 by Antonio dell'Oglio.

The two side altars in the nave and the pulpit were probably made around 1860. The stations of the cross date from around 1740.
