meaning
The starting point Galtür was partially settled from the Engadine and had interest obligations in the Engadine since the Middle Ages. Since around 1500 the pass has been of great importance as a mule pass between the Engadine and the Paznaun Valley. At this time, the two starting points Galtür and Ardez formed a common parish and the contact was close, despite the high, separating mountain ridge.
In the 20th century , the pass was used for smuggling, including tobacco, coffee and saccharine . A disintegrating today inch base on Finanzerstein on a boulder on the north side of the pass testifies to the struggle between the customs authorities and the smugglers.
